A shortage of eligible single women in western India has prompted some poverty-stricken husbands to rent out their wives to other men on a monthly rate. An husband allowed his wife ( she is a farm labourer and mother of two children) to stay with her boss for Rs 8.000 ( 115 €, US$ 140) a month.
Poor families and middle-men have also cashed in on the shortage of women by selling their daughters. Brokers can make up to Rs 200.000 ( 2900 €, US$ 3600) a month from finding and selling wives to single and wealthy men.
No police actions are taken because no one comes forward to lodge a complaint. It has to be said India has a widespread problem of female foeticide because parents are reluctant to pay high dowries as it is customary in case of having girls.
